Filmmakers offer advice
BY MARGARET A. McGURK
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Having surmounted their own obstacles, independent filmmakers are eager to offer advice and encouragement to those who hope to do the same. Here is a sampling gathered from attendees at the Midwest Filmmakers Conference in Cleveland:
Hampton Fancher, screenwriter of Blade Runner and director of Sundance Film Festival entry The Minus Man: The big break is breaking your bones on your own tenacity.
Todd Edwards, Columbus native and director of Sundance entry Chillicothe, a comedy set in Tulsa: I was always very focused on what I wanted the end result to be, but I had no idea how to get there. .... Sometimes, (making the film) was almost like The Little Rascals. The number one talent you have to have is ... persistence.
Cauleen Smith, director of Drylongso: Any time I heard myself say "I can't' or "They won't let me,' I just had to choke that down and go ahead. ... Just being able to laugh at the people who doubted you, that is really a pleasure.
Ed Stone, screenwriter of Sundance entry Happy, Texas, which has been acquired for distribution by Miramax. We won the lottery. We were a comedy at the time when it was good to be a big broad comedy. ... I think you have to just imagine yourself five years from now with all the success you hope for, and ask that person what advice they'd give you. I think they would say, "Just start.'
