Pilot collapses, dies after setting plane onto road

FOSTER, Ky. The pilot of a small airplane that made an emergency landing on the AA Highway died Saturday after collapsing at the scene.
Jerry Warren, 55, of Prospect, Ky., near Louisville, died Saturday night, officials from St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas said.
Witnesses to the emergency landing told police Mr. Warren was walking around after bringing the plane to a stop. As he talked on a phone to report the incident, Mr. Warren collapsed, Kentucky State Trooper Mike Keeney said.
State troopers and federal aviation officials were investigating what police said was a hard landing about 5:30 p.m. along a hilly stretch of the AA Highway about a mile southeast of the Bracken-Pendleton county line.
Witnesses told police they heard what sounded like engine problems and that the plane was circling the area apparently looking for a spot to land, Trooper Keeney said. As the pilot attempted to land on the roadway, the plane clipped utility lines, which sliced off a portion of its rudder.
Mr. Warren was able to land the plane, which lost a wheel on impact. The plane spun at least 90 degrees before stopping on its underbelly. One wing was damaged, apparently by a trailer being pulled by a vehicle on the highway, Trooper Keeney said.
No one on the ground was injured.
The pilot got out of the plane and talked briefly with passersby who had stopped to help, Trooper Keeney said. He collapsed shortly afterward.
