Highlands' Smith makes Ky. All-Star team
BY RAY SCHAEFER

GEORGETOWN, Ky. Highlands senior forward Derek Smith had history on his mind Sunday.
The 6-foot-6 forward will have the chance to make some as well. The Mr. Basketball runner-up was one of 14 named to the Boys Kentucky Lions All-Star team at Georgetown College.
The boys and girls teams will play their Indiana counterparts June 19 at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis and June 26 at Farnham Dudgeon Civic Center in Frankfort.
Smith was thinking about 1986, the last year Kentucky's boys swept Indiana. That team included future NBA players Rex Chapman and Felton Spen cer.
There's expectation we can sweep them again, Smith said. It could be that way.
Boys coach Kerry Stovall of Muhlenberg South hasn't formed a game plan yet, but he said Smith will be an integral part.
We have kids who can go up and down, but we also have a degree of size, also, Stovall said. I think Derek brings a lot to the table. He can score from outside; he can score from inside. We're going to look for Derek Smith to be Derek Smith.
Stephanie Sandfoss of Highlands, Jennifer Stasie of Conner and Beth Lye of Scott failed to make the girls squad.
