Lynn Stern, co-founder of one of Cincinnati's largest programs for cancer survivors, died Sunday in her Blue Ash home. She was 55.
Since 1987, Mrs. Stern served as the executive director and co-founder of the Cincinnati chapter of the Wellness Community, a free support program based in Kenwood that helps more than 10,000 people a year.
Since its inception, the Cincinnati chapter has grown to include 28 programs and services, with branch offices in Fort Wright and Franklin.
Mrs. Stern, who in March was named one of the Enquirer's Women of the Year for 1999, fought three battles against cancer ovarian cancer in 1987; breast cancer in 1995; and the most recent, final bout of cancer that spread to her lungs, liver and bones.
She discontinued chemotherapy several months ago to live her final days surrounded by family and friends without suffering the treatment's harsh side effects.
Mrs. Stern was born in Roanoke, Va. She received a bachelor's degree in theater and English from the University of Georgia in 1966 and a master's in audiology from University of Cincinnati in 1982.
From 1967 through 1969, Mrs. Stern taught English at Schroder Junior High and worked as an audiologist from 1982 to 1987.
She had been the executive director of the Wellness Community since 1989.
Mrs. Stern is survived by her husband of 31 years, Ned; a daughter, Kate Gonzalez of Deer Park; a son, Joe; two brothers, Harry Davidow of East End and Ralph Davidow of Amberley Village; and two grandchildren.
Weil Funeral Home in North Avondale is handling the funeral arrangements. Visitation is 9 a.m. Wednesday, followed by services at 10 a.m. at Wise Temple in Amberley Village.
