CINCINNATI HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Exchange student carries Fairfield to tennis win

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Everything that Fairfield tennis coach Dave Burchfield heard about Arno Schwanz, a German foreign exchange student, has turned out to be true.

“I was told that Arno had a lot of potential,” Burchfield said. “He's small (5-foot-8) but is a good all-around player. The fact that he is undefeated doesn't surprise me.”

Schwanz came through with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Javier Casarrubio as Fairfield remained undefeated in the Greater Miami Conference (5-0) with a 4-1 victory over Hamilton on Wednesday.

The victory sets up Tuesday's showdown against undefeated Sycamore, the No.1 team in The Enquirer's weekly boys' tennis poll.

In the match against Sycamore, Schwanz will be tested by Eric Pittman, the defending Division I state champion.

“It should be a good match,” Burchfield said.

Burchfield was also high on Nino White, an undefeated freshman who has been the biggest surprise on the team.

TEAMS SQUARE OFF: A record-tying 38 teams are entered in the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association Classic, which begins today at nine sites.

The teams are divided into five flights as determined by the city rankings and assessment of the coaches.

Sycamore, Walnut Hills, Turpin, Anderson, CHCA, St.Xavier, Seven Hills and Indian Hill are in Flight A at Mason (singles) and Kings (doubles) with matches beginning at 3p.m. at all sites.

Each player will play three matches at all of the sites.

The locations include: Flight B — Fairfield (singles), Winton Woods (doubles); Flight C— Seven Hills (singles), Summit Country Day (doubles); Flight D — Blue Ash Recreation (singles), Madeira Swim Club (doubles), and Flight E — Princeton (singles and doubles).

The back-draw matches and any incomplete winners' bracket matches will be played at 8a.m. Saturday with the championship matches at Princeton beginning at 1p.m.

Baseball
        • Northwest 12, Harrison 11 — Chris Styles was tired of losing to Harrison, and the Wildcat senior did something about it.

Besides smacking a triple and a home run, Styles drove in the winning run with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, giving Northwest its first victory over Harrison since 1996.

        • Wyoming 13, Indian Hill 4 — Matt Mefford skipped basketball to lift weights in preparation for the college football season at the University of Pittsburgh.

But Wyoming baseball coach Ron Ogden is thrilled that Mefford decided not to skip baseball season, too.

It was Mefford's three-run home run in the first inning that set the stage for the Cowboys' easy victory, avenging a 12-3 loss to the Braves on Tuesday.

        • Colerain 13, Lakota East 4 — Junior catcher John Fiasco belted a home run with one on in the third and drove in two more runs with a double in the fourth as the Cardinals remained one game behind Hamilton in the GMC.
