AOL helps Fort Thomas police
BY KRISTINA GOETZ
The Cincinnati Enquirer
FORT THOMAS Fort Thomas police worked with America Online Friday night to identify two people who threatened a Fort Thomas teen over the Internet.
Scot Gonzales of the Fort Thomas Police Department said AOL released records that identified the people. One was a 14-year-old boy from Overton Park, Kan., and the other, police think was a man from Salem, Ore.
We do not believe the two people are connected, Patrolman Gonzales said.
The police department has contacted the 14-year-old's parents in Kansas.
The mother was already screaming for him before I could get off the phone, the officer said.
Police had not contacted the Oregon man.
Officials say the young Fort Thomas resident was sending e-mail to a relative about 9 p.m. when he began receiving instant messages from two different user names. They were innocent at first, but quickly turned hostile.
Both individuals said something like, "Do you want to die? We can help you with that,' Patrolman Gonzales said.
Police say the young man got scared when the two gave information about him that they should not have known unless they knew him. The young man told police he had no idea who the two could be.
Patrolman Gonzales said charges of terroristic threatening and harassing communications will go on file in Kentucky.
We are also looking to talk to federal authorities, Patrolman Gonzales said.
Threating communication that crosses state lines is a federal offense.
