Drunken-driving suspect on bond
'You are not to get near a vehicle'
BY JANICE MORSE
The Cincinnati Enquirer
HAMILTON Municipal Judge John G. Rosmarin on Friday agreed to allow a drunken-driving defendant to be freed on a property bond but gave him a stern lecture about the conditions of his release.
Judge Rosmarin ordered Ronald Wayne Jarrett to continue his employment as a bricklayer, but told him: You are not to get near a vehicle, do you understand?
Mr. Jarrett, 34, of Hamilton, faces his sixth drunken-driving charge in connection with a Wednesday afternoon accident in which two small children in a stroller were injured.
Police allege Mr. Jarrett left the Pub Club tavern, 610 Heaton St., and backed his pickup truck into the children around 5:30 p.m. as their mother, Amy Reed, stood talking on a pay phone.
Ms. Reed's son, Samuel Abshear, 2, required at least 15 stitches on his face and inside his mouth. He remained at Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition Friday.
Ms. Reed and her daughter, Sandra Abshear, who turns 1 on Tuesday, were treated at Mercy Hospital Hamilton and released.
I consider this very serious, as does every sensible person, Judge Rosmarin said. Mr. Jarrett replied, I do, too.
Mr. Jarrett's bond had been set at $25,000 cash, but Judge Rosmarin agreed to accept the $50,000 property bond offered by the defendant's family.
His next court appearance is set for Thursday.
A police report shows Mr. Jarrett refused field sobriety tests and wouldn't take a breath test. It also says Mr. Jarrett had to lean against another car to maintain balance and was very unsteady on his feet as he walked.
