Man hurt in crash fleeing police

Truck had been stolen, officials say

BY JANICE MORSE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A police chase traversed several Butler County communities and ended with a crash Friday afternoon — the county's second police chase-and-crash this week.

The unidentified suspect was flown to University Hospital after the truck he was driving struck two trees along Ohio 73 just west of U.S. 127 near Oxford, said Fairfield Township Police Capt. Alan Laney.

The chase began at 12:11 p.m. in northeast Hamilton, where police tried to stop the truck because it had been reported stolen, said Officer Don Taylor, Hamilton police spokesman. When the fleeing vehicle left the city, Hamilton police called the Butler County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies took over the pursuit and followed the truck until the crash at about 12:30, said Butler County Sheriff's Capt. Anthony Dwyer.

While the chase went through part of Fairfield Township, the truck “crashed through a couple yards and fences,” Capt. Laney said.

The driver's condition was not immediately available, and police were still considering charges against him.

Capt. Dwyer said the man had several aliases and his true identity had not been confirmed.

This chase differed from Tuesday's fatal chase, partly because the suspect traveled at relatively low speeds, reaching only about 60 mph, police said.

On Tuesday, burglary suspect Tony Potter, 33, of Batavia died after a chase that exceeded 100 mph.

Mr. Potter, who allegedly fired shots at an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper, was ejected from his wrecked truck along Cincinnati-Dayton Road.
