CINCINNATI HIGH SCHOOL REPORT
Reloaded Mason victorious
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Three players, out most of the season with injuries, returned to the lineup Saturday and led the Mason Comets to the championship of the Warren County Tournament.
John Krugman played a major role in Mason's 9-7 victory over Springboro in the championship game, driving in seven runs with a grand slam and a three-run homer.
While we were in Florida during the spring break, John hurt his arm throwing, Mason coach Ken Gray said. He missed three games early in the week because of a funeral in the family.
After sitting out the past two weeks with a broken hand, Paul Hammonds pitched five innings in the championship game, striking out eight.
Paul broke the hand diving for a ball in right field, Gray said. Todd Hoffert has also been out with an infection, and he came back today and had two hits in the semifinals against Little Miami.
Mason also won the Warren County championship in 1998, and the Comets are now 12-3.
Clermont Northeastern 5, Cincinnati Country Day 0 The Rockets played the role of the spoiler, riding the arm of junior Scott Stocker to the victory in the championship game of the CCD Invitational.
Besides scattering three hits, Stocker also had a run-scoring double.
Scott's curve was great today, CNE coach Jeff Newmann said. Winning this tournament could turn the team around. We won two games this week but lost the four before that.
The Rockets defeated Williamsburg 14-1 to reach the championship game.
St. Bernard 4, Finneytown 2 The Titans remained hot, winning an eighth consecutive game.
We cut down on the errors and started hitting the ball, St. Bernard coach Bruce Begley said.
Tom Puckett (3-1) struck out eight. Jeremy Kramer's two-run homer in the fifth inning was the big hit.
Norwood 16, Purcell Marian 2 Any doubts about the Indians were put to rest in the Norwood Mid City Classic.
J.D. Foust drove in six runs, and pitcher Adam Brock drove in four while also going the distance, allowing four hits for the Indians (13-1).
Softball
Newark 3, Sycamore 1 Two unearned runs spelled defeat for the first time this season for the Aviators (12-1).
McAuley 3, Mercy 0 Pitcher Sarah Zoeller avenged a 7-3 loss to Mercy on Friday, giving up two hits as the Mohawks captured the championship of the Best of the West Tournament.
