Local VA hospital found in compliance with standards

BY TIM BONFIELD
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A top official at Cincinnati's VA Medical Center said Friday that the local center may not be affected much by an order from the Department of Veterans Affairs to review research practices at all 173 veterans medical centers across the country.

That's because investigations about research practices at Cincinnati's VA Medical Center have already begun. And an internal review has given a clean bill of health to local practices.

“We've had our own self-review in place for months. And last week, our headquarters research services branch sent in an outside review team,” said Dr. Henry Grinvalsky, chief of staff at Cincinnati's VA Medical Center.

A draft report about that visit found that local research protocols, informed consent procedures and oversight “met or exceeded national standards,” Dr. Grinvalsky said.

“I would hope what we have done here will be adequate” to comply with the new, nationwide review, he said.

However, a separate investigation by the National Institute of Health's Office for Protection from Research Risks that is looking at research involving both the VA and the University of Cincinnati has not been completed.
