The total: $2,221,024.44.The University of California School of Medicine requested the most, $1,998,000; the smallest request was from the North Shore Animal League, for $2.50, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Yuk it up: It's National Cartoonists Week, today through Sunday. You can salute cartoonists by reading the comics page, renting an animated film, buying a greeting card or catching up on TV 'toons. As for the cartoonists, they'll salute themselves in San Antonio at the National Cartoonists Society's annual awards Saturday night.
