Man gets 30 years in murder

Hayden gets 10 more years for assault

The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — Robert Hayden III, 46, of Covington, was sentenced Monday to 40 years in prison for murdering Girard Crosby and assaulting his wife, Jamie Crosby, last May.

A Kenton Circuit Court jury found him guilty of murder and second-degree assault in March. Kenton Circuit Judge Patricia Summe adhered to the jury's sentencing recommendation when she said Mr. Hayden would serve 30 years for the murder charge and 10 years for the assault charge. The individual sentences are to run consecutively.

Actions "surreal'
Judge Summe recalled the testimony she heard at Mr. Hayden's trial and said that his actions had seemed so unemotional and cold-blooded that “it was surreal.”

Investigators have said Mr. Hayden fatally stabbed Mr. Crosby in the early morning hours of May 30, after an argument broke out in the home of Mrs. Crosby.

Mr. Hayden's attorneys contended at the trial that their client stabbed Mr. Crosby in self-defense. Kenton Commonwealth Attorney Don Buring said that Mr. Hayden was the aggressor, stabbing Mr. Crosby 14 times.

Trio stayed together
Mr. Hayden was the estranged boyfriend of Mrs. Crosby last spring, when both he and Mr. Crosby were living with her. The Crosbys had been separated and both men were staying at her home.

Mr. Hayden's attorneys already have unsuccessfully requested a re-trial. They are planning to appeal the jury's verdict and Monday's sentencing.
