N.KY. HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

CovCath taken down by St. X grand slam

The Cincinnati Enquirer

After taking an 8-7 lead with a three-run rally in the seventh inning, it appeared that the Covington Catholic baseball team would pick up its 17th victory.

But St.Xavier junior Dan George, benched several weeks ago for poor hitting, smacked a grand slam with two outs, lifting the Bombers to a 12-8 victory at St.X.

George's blast was St.Xavier's 26th of the season, breaking the single-season record of 25 set last year.

With two outs and none on, St.Xavier sophomore Pat LeMasters started the rally with a single. Eric Arling hit a single, which was followed by Keith Jackson's RBI double. A walk loaded the bases, setting up George.

        • Dixie Heights 6, Roger Bacon 3 — Jay Wuellner drove in two runs, and pitcher Tom Unkraut went the distance, giving the Colonels their 19th victory of the season.

        • Lloyd 16, Dayton 2 — The Juggernauts won their sixth consecutive game as Dave Couch came through with two triples and three RBI in the 10-run third inning.

Bret Mullins struck out seven to pick up his third victory.

Walton Verona 6, Newport 3 — Brandon Coffey smacked a home run with two on in the first inning and pitched a complete game, striking out nine, for the Bearcats.

        • Newport Central Catholic 10, Villa Madonna 0 — Jason Roderick pitched a no-hitter, walking only one, and added a solo home run with two RBI for the Thoroughbreds.

Fast-pitch softball
        • Notre Dame Academy 13, Holy Cross 2 — The Pandas rebounded from Monday's first loss with pitcher Jessica Birkenhauer striking out 11 and allowing only three hits.
