Error forces Ohio Lottery offline briefly
The Associated Press
CLEVELAND Ohio Lottery online games briefly were shut down Wednesday after some tickets were sold with the wrong date.
The problem occurred at 1:04 p.m., said lottery spokeswoman Jennifer Rowland. During a routine check, a systems operator for GTECH Holdings Corp., the company that runs the lottery's online games, inadvertently closed the pools, meaning the computer would not accept wagers for the Wednesday drawings.
For seven minutes, any plays in the Pick 3 Numbers and Pick 4 Numbers games intended for the Wednesday drawings were instead entered for today's drawings, and any plays for the Wednesday Super Lotto and Kicker were entered for Saturday, Ms. Rowland said.
Once the problem was realized, all online games were shut down at 1:11 p.m., she said.
The Buckeye 5 game, which is not played on Wednesdays, was restored at 1:35 p.m., and the other games Super Lotto, Kicker, Pick 3 Numbers and Pick 4 Numbers were down until 3:10 p.m., she said.
Ms. Rowland said the lottery will try to determine today what to do about players who intended to play a game for Wednesday but were entered for another day.
Ms. Rowland said the lottery will attempt to estimate the extent of lost sales and will hold GTECH financially responsible, according to terms of its contract with GTECH.
