Burch residents dislike traffic plan

        Residents of Burch Avenue in Hyde Park gave a resounding no Thursday night to a proposal to use the street as an access to an expanded shopping center.

        The protest came in a meeting of city of Cincinnati officials with the Hyde Park Community Council at the Oakley Community/Senior Center in Hyde Park Plaza. About 150 residents attended.

        Leon Meyer, director of the city Planning Department, said he called the meeting to get comments on how the residents felt about using the street to get to the planned expansion of Rookwood Pavilion. Burch Avenue is in the city. The expanded shopping center, Rookwood Commons, is in Norwood.

        Burch Avenue is used as an access to the Hyde Park Lumber Co. property, which has been sold to the developer as part of the expansion.

        Loud voices came from a packed audience about what they thought would happen if the narrow street is used:

        • “Our children would be run down.”

        • “Block the street and build a fence around it.”

        • “Let Norwood use one of its streets.”

        Developer Jeffrey Anderson is planning the $60 million expansion. He said he didn't think using the street as a secondary access route would be a detriment to the neighborhood, a comment that drew laughter and groans from the crowd.

        “Why don't you put the shopping center in Indian Hill?” said Jack Clark of the 3500 block of Burch Avenue, a reference to where Mr. Anderson lives.

        Assistant City Solicitor Ely Ryder said the city was convinced no one wanted Burch Avenue to be used as an access road, but said the legal question is: When the Hyde Park Lumber property was sold to the developer, did the access go with the sale?

        “I think we can legally block the access because it goes from one municipality to another, and it might hold up in case it gets to court,” Mr. Ryder said.
