CINCINNATI HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Young Kings rules FAVC tennis again

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Winning Fort Ancient Valley Conference championships is becoming a habit for the Kings boys tennis team.

Fielding a team without a senior, the Knights wrapped up a fifth consecutive championship Friday with a 5-0 decision over Loveland.

“This is pretty significant, because we lost a lot of key players,” first-year coach Dan Weckstein said. “We won with a freshman (Eugene Duke) and two sophomores (Alex Rekhtman and Josh Blatman) at singles.”

And the Knights' No.1 doubles team of junior John Brose and sophomore Brian Chapman went undefeated.

Baseball
        • Taylor 9, Western Brown 6, Division II sectional at Roselawn — Mike Voynovich's two-run single in the sixth clinched the victory for Taylor. Western Brown committed six errors, three straight in the four- run fourth inning.

        • Roger Bacon 12, Goshen 1, Division II sectional at Roselawn — The Spartans scored eight runs in the fourth inning when Ryan Bucalo hit two doubles and drove in four of the runs.

        • Turpin 2, Purcell Marian 0, Division II sectional at Midland Complex — Two-hit pitching by senior Josh Nesbitt and a triple play with the bases loaded in the seventh inning lifted the Spartans.

        • Loveland 4, Clermont NE 3, Division II sectional at McNicholas — Blake Betz scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Shaulie Grinsphan in the sixth inning.

        • Mariemont 5, Finneytown 3, Division III at Tealtown — The Warriors beat the Wildcats for the third time this season, taking advantage of three walks in the four-run third inning.

        • Cincinnati Country Day 4, Cincinnati Christian 2, Division IV at Tealtown — Sophomore Roman Duty hit a solo homer in the first inning, and Jon Smith had a three-run blast in the third for the Indians.

Softball
        • Ursuline 7, Walnut Hills 6, Division I sectional at Rumpke Park — Sandy Wurzelbacher's single scored Charlotte Lux with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

        • Mason 4, New Richmond 1, Division I sectional at Rumpke Park — Freshman Stephanie Piontek fired her second one-hitter this week.

        • Glen Este 3, Western Brown 2, Division I sectional at Rumpke — Junior Danielle Smith's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh drove in the winning run for the Trojans.

        • Williamsburg 6, Madeira 5 — Kelly Wheaton's RBI double drove in Danielle Pierson with the game- winning run in the sixth inning.

        • Fayetteville 20, Seven Hills 12, Division III sectional at Riverstar Park — A six-run rally in the seventh inning put away the game for the Rockets.
