ESPN honors Big 'O'

The ESPN panel says Oscar Robertson is 38th. On the list of the 100 Greatest Athletes of Past 100 Years, that is.

The show honoring Robertson, a former University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Royals basketball star, will air at 10:30p.m. Friday on ESPN.

The Top 100 were picked by ESPN's panel of 48 journalists and sports figures.

“Some of our older panelists argued to put him higher,” said Josh Krulewitz of ESPN. “We've got a lot of basketball players who haven't been named (yet). (Michael) Jordan, Wilt (Chamberlain), (Larry) Bird, Magic (Johnson). But he's ahead of Mickey Mantle (39th). That's not bad.”

Pete Rose was 56th. — John Fay
