N.KY. HIGH SCHOOL REPORT
Newport's Newton launches key homer
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The message from Newport baseball coach Ray Brown finally got through to Doug Newton, a junior infielder for the Wildcats.
I've told Doug all season that he has to swing to be dangerous, Brown said. He's usually tentative at the plate but not today.
Newton's two-out, two-run home run in the sixth inning gave the Wildcats an 8-4 victory over Campbell County in Alexandria.
The homer was Newton's second of the year. He has four hits in the last two games.
Ryle 11, St. Henry 3 A three-run home run by Scott Buckler in the first inning set the tone.
Sophomore Pat McMeans remained undefeated at 7-0 and pitched a complete game.
Softball
Dixie Heights 10, Campbell County 8 Despite an unbeaten record, senior Ashlee Terry has pitched sparingly for Dixie Heights.
But Terry (5-0) came through again for the Colonels, giving Dixie Heights a home victory over Campbell County.
Ashlee's last start was two weeks ago, Dixie Heights coach Dean Fookes said. We wanted to get her ready for the tournament in case we need two pitchers.
Senior Amy Simpson's triple drove in the tying run in the sixth inning, and Kasey Neugent followed with a game-winning single.
