Boehner, lobbyists probed on spending
BY PAUL BARTON
Enquirer Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON The Federal Election Commission is continuing to probe U.S. Rep. John Boehner's possible role in illegally coordinated past campaign expenditures with outside groups.
Acting on a year-old complaint filed by the Democratic National Committee, the FEC has issued subpoenas to Mr. Boehner and his chief of staff, Barry Jackson.
The DNC alleges that Mr. Boehner and a group of business lobbying groups known as the Coalition conferred on how to spend $4 million in the 1996 campaigns. Such coordination is prohibited by federal election laws.
Mr. Boehner, R-West Chester, was chairman of the House Republican Conference at the time.
Mr. Boehner's office said it is prohibited from speaking out on the case by FEC rules.
Unfortunately, we're precluded from commenting, and that's very frustrating when you are the target of this kind of thing, said Dave Schnittger, Mr. Boehner's press secretary.
