CINCINNATI HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Seniors spark Batavia rally

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Senior Andrew Edwards drove in the winning run with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping a three-run rally that gave Batavia an 8-7 victory over Bethel-Tate in a first-round Division III sectional game at Batavia.

“Three seniors batted in the seventh, and all reached base,” Batavia coach Brian Anstaett said. “Two scored, and the other (Edwards) had the game-winning RBI.”

After going down in order in the sixth, the outlook didn't appear bright for the Bulldogs, who had split with Bethel-Tate during the regular season.

“The kids were trying to do too much in the sixth inning and, as a result, popped up,” Anstaett said. “I told them to concentrate on base hits and taking advantage of any mistakes.”

Batavia meets Indian Hill on Tuesday at Tealtown Park in the sectional semifinals.

        • Springboro 13, Edgewood 2, Dayton Division II sectional at Springboro — The Panthers batted nine and scored nine runs in the second inning en route to the victory, avenging a regular-season loss.

Junior Luke Howard (5-2) went the distance, striking out eight and allowing two hits. Joey Mockbee and Justin Kees each smacked home runs for Springboro.

        • Alter 15, Lemon-Monroe 2, Division II sectional at Lemon-Monroe — Adam Waleskowski is best known for basketball, but the 6-foot-8 sophomore quickly is earning a reputation as a pitcher for the Knights' baseball team.

Given an eight-run cushion after two innings, Waleskowski struck out eight and limited the Hornets to five hits. Alter visits Springboro on Monday.

        • Middletown 8, Oak Hills 3, Division I sectional at Fairfield — The Middies took a 4-0 first-inning lead and never look back.

After allowing one run in the first inning, sophomore pitcher Chad Irving gave up only three hits the remainder of the game.

“This is something that we really needed,” Middletown coach Mark Kerns said.

Pete Howard led the offense with three RBI, with Kyle Andre knocking in two. Middletown meets Colerain in a semifinal game Tuesday at Fairfield.

        • Talawanda 11, Winton Woods 1, Division I sectional at Fairfield — The Braves scored seven runs in the third inning.

Softball
        • Harrison 5, Mount Healthy 0, Division I sectional at Fairfield — Chrissy Esterman struck out nine, walked one and allowed two hits.

        • Lebanon 16, Middletown 3, Division I sectional at Fairfield — Lindy Pritchard and Savannah Spring each drove in three runs for a Warriors team that collected 18 hits.

        • Talawanda 17, Lemon Monroe 0, Division I sectional at Harrison — Freshman pitcher Heather Clark struck out 12 and allowed two hits.

        • Edgewood 4, Northwest 2, Division I sectional at Fairfield — Senior pitcher Sammi Gibbs struck out nine, and Megan Pate drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

        • Princeton 18, Franklin 7, Division I sectional at Harrison — Junior Kelly Gwin drove in six runs with five singles.
