N.KY. HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Popham's homers spur CovCath

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Greg Popham of Covington Catholic continues to swing one of the hottest bats in Northern Kentucky.

Popham's two home runs powered the Colonels to a 10-7 victory at Boone County on Saturday.

“I took Greg out of the lineup several weeks ago but recently re-inserted him as a designated hitter,” Colonels coach Bill Krumpelbeck said. “He's responded with five home runs, including two grand slammers.”

After starting the season at 6-6, Krumpelbeck made several other changes. Covington Catholic has won 14 of its last 17 games.

“Early in the season, I didn't think there was any way we could win 20 games,” Krumpelbeck said. “This was our 20th victory, which is the 13th consecutive season we reached 20.”

Pitcher Tony Maynard went the distance for Covington Catholic to pick up the victory.

        • Lloyd 4, Scott 2 — Since joining the Lloyd baseball team at midseason, junior pitcher Ryan Wilson has been unbeatable.

Wilson is 3-0 after limiting the Eagles to four hits. Freshman Brett Mullins drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth inning.

        • Campbell County 9, Louisville DeSales 7, at Bourbon County Invitational — Kevin Munninghoff drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth inning and pitched the final three innings to pick up the victory.

        • Campbell County 4, Bourbon County 2 — Jeremy Wilson is the starting shortstop for Campbell County and seldom pitches for the Camels.

Pressed into action Saturday, Wilson played a major role. He limited Bourbon County to five hits to pick up his second victory, a win in the championship game of the Bourbon County Invitational.

“Jeremy's not bad and did a good job today,” Campbell County coach Jack Mohr said.

Softball
        • Grant County 4, Harrison County 1 — Marian Cooper did it all for the Braves.

Besides pitching a complete game and allowing only four hits, Cooper also led the team with two hits.

Jackie Gordon's single drove in what proved to be the winning run in the three-run sixth inning.
