AOL makes deals to put Internet on TV sets

The Associated Press

NEW YORK — America Online Inc. took preliminary steps Tuesday toward bringing its service to TV sets, announcing partnerships with companies to develop equipment that would allow access to the Internet through televisions.

AOL will join DirectTV, Hughes Network Systems, Philips Electronics and Network Computer Inc., to develop set-top boxes to connect televisions to the Internet by using satellite dishes, high-speed digital subscriber lines and 56K modems.

Barry Schuler, president of America Online's Interactive Services Group, said the proposed system would also allow viewers to watch TV while surfing the Internet.

The targeted audience is 17 million AOL subscribers who already access the service through personal computers, he said.

“We believe that this is a natural evolution of what is happening in the marketplace,” he said.
