CCM dean Werner to retire
BY JANELLE GELFAND
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Robert J. Werner, dean for 15 years at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, has announced he will retire at the end of his appointment, June 30, 2000.
The announcement, made to CCM faculty on Tuesday, was planned to allow the university time to establish a search committee and find the next dean, he says.
Mr. Werner credits his faculty for the national recognition and numerous awards and honors the college has received during his tenure. For him, the highlights are the faculty we have been able to bring together, and the synergy that is now possible between the performing arts and electronic media.
No one comes to study with the dean, he says. They come because of the quality of faculty and the education they can receive here. ...
In the latest rankings (1997) by U.S. News & World Report, CCM was ranked the sixth top school in the country for pursuing a graduate degree in music, with vocal programs rated third and conducting programs ranked fifth.
Enrollment reached an all-time high last fall, with 1,390 students in undergraduate and graduate programs.
A significant achievement of Mr. Werner's tenure has been the $93.2 million renovation and construction of CCM's campus village, which will open this fall. A year-long fete, from conferences to gala performances, will culminate in a celebratory weekend, Dec. 3-5.
I think our future is bright, Mr. Werner says. '
Mr. Werner, 67, came to CCM in 1985 after a period of leadership turmoil, when the college had seven deans over six years.
He brought a sense of strength and continuity to an institution badly in need of stable leadership, says Karen Faaborg, co-director of CCM's arts administration program and former associate dean. He fought the good fight through all the draconian budget cuts of the past decade and kept CCM in a position to maintain its reputation and international stature.
Mr. Werner is on the board of trustees of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and serves on its music director search committee. He is also on the board of Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Ballet and the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.
