A Cincinnati police officer's career is at stake over a fight with his girlfriend that landed him in court Tuesday.
Officer Keith Sayles, 31, a patrol officer in downtown's District 1, was arrested Monday on two counts of domestic violence.
The Cincinnati Police Division suspended his police powers Tuesday pending an administrative hearing. He is reassigned to desk duty while the case is pending.
Hamilton County sheriff's deputies arrested him following an argument with his girlfriend at Pep Boys Automotive Supercenter in Kenwood.
Deputies said he and his girlfriend were arguing over custody of their 3-month-old baby. As the baby cried, Officer Sayles became verbally abusive toward the woman, his arrest report said.
According to court records, the woman then slapped him across the face, he drove back to their house in Symmes Township, and they began arguing again.
The woman called 911, and during the call, Officer Sayles who is 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds struck her in the face, causing her to have a bloody nose, the arrest report said.
The woman refused medical treatment.
Officer Sayles is out of jail on supervised release. The next step is for a grand jury to hear his case and decide whether to indict him.
If Officer Sayles is found guilty of domestic violence, he will lose his gun under a federal law prohibiting people with domestic violence convictions from carrying them.
The prohibition, passed by Congress in 1996, amended the 1994 Brady Law. It applies to anyone with a misdemeanor or felony conviction involving domestic violence.
