Y closes building after fire to assess

FORT THOMAS Campbell County's YMCA likely will stay closed for at least several days until officials decide how long it will take to clean up the fire-damaged building.
An employee reporting to work about 6 a.m. Tuesday discovered the building on fire. Though the flames were confined to the sauna area, much of the rest of the facility was damaged by smoke. Firefighters estimated the loss at $50,000 to $75,000.
When you have smoke damage, you have a lot of smoke and soot, said Dave Hayward, senior executive director of the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati. We want to make sure the building is up to our standards before reopening it.
The fire will not affect any of the Y's operations that take place elsewhere, such as child-care sites and youth sports programs, he said. Members can use any other affiliated YMCA in the Tristate until the Fort Thomas building reopens.
Cause unknown
Firefighters finished their on-site investigation later Tuesday, said Capt. Dale Edmondson, and turned the building over to Y officials. It was still too soon to tell, he said, what caused the fire.
Cindy Koenig, executive director of the branch, said she was grateful the fire happened when no one was in the building.
