CINCINNATI HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Williams carries Harrison

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Lebanon baseball coach Lee Day played a hunch, and it worked for the Warriors.

With Mike Williams pitching instead of ace Bryan Anderson, the Warriors responded with a 9-4 victory over Harrison in a Division I sectional tournament game at Lakota East.

“We used five pitchers yesterday trying to beat Loveland in a game that went nine innings,” Day said. “I was going to start Bryan, but I told Mike last night that he was getting the ball.”

Lebanon scored single runs in the first three innings and three more in both the fourth and fifth while Williams held Harrison to four hits.

“We needed Mike to step up big,” Day said. “He gave up only four hits in the first six innings before Lebanon started hitting him in the seventh.”

Lebanon scored nine runs without an extra-base hit and moved on to play second-seeded Colerain at 5:30p.m. Thursday at Fairfield.

        • Roger Bacon 5, McNicholas 2, Division II sectional at Midland — A three-run rally in the fifth, coupled with the pitching of Brian Lakes, carried the Spartans to the upset of the defending Division II state champion Rockets.

“I could sense before the game that the kids were focused and ready to play,” Roger Bacon coach Tom Roebel said. “McNicholas hit the ball well, but we made the big plays.

        • Colerain 9, Middletown 4, Division I sectional at Fairfield — The Cardinals scored nine runs in the third inning, with Brad Dorrmann's grand slam the big hit.

        • Ross 6, Turpin 5, Division II sectional at Anderson — A leadoff home run by Scott Minges in the fourth inning triggered a five-run rally that carried the Rams past the Spartans.

        • Norwood 4, Taylor 3, Division II sectional at Midland — Blair Murphy's squeeze bunt scored pinch runner Matt Kemp with the winning run in the sixth inning.

“Taylor upset us in the second round last year,” Norwood coach Jack Bouldin said. “We had revenge on our minds, and the kids came out focused, because they know what it's like to be the favorite and not win.”

        • Loveland 9, New Richmond 2, Division II sectional at Anderson — Senior John Hembree allowed one hit in five innings while Matt Shelton Drove in three runs with two doubles for the Tigers.

        • Wyoming 7, St. Bernard 0, Division III sectional at Tealtown Park — Sophomore pitcher Pat Dennis remained undefeated (7-0), walking two and allowing one hit.

        • Indian Hill 6, Batavia 4, Division III sectional at Tealtown — A two-run home by junior Charlie Hahl drove in the winning runs while the Brave defense pulled off double plays to end both the sixth and seventh innings.

Softball
        • McAuley 13, Norwood 1, Division I sectional at Lakota West — Senior Sarah Zoller struck out 11 and allowed only one hit while Sherry Huber, out the past two weeks with a fractured wrist, doubled and tripled for the Mohawks.

        • Waynesville 7, Cincinnati Country Day 5, Division III sectional at Riverstar — Waynesville took advantage of three CCD errors, scoring five unearned runs, to upset the No.2 seeded Indians.
