Captain waives appearance after arrest

The Cincinnati Enquirer

He was a Hamilton County corrections center captain, but $176 worth of clothing might have cost William Cronin his 27-year career.

Capt. Cronin, 48, is accused of stealing men's clothing from Dillard's department store in Northgate Mall, where he worked as a security officer. The store captured the thefts on videotape on May 4 and on Tuesday, his arrest report says.

The Colerain Township man waived his court appearance Wednesday in Hamilton County Municipal Court on a charge of theft in office, a fifth-degree felony.

If convicted, he could end up in the same jail cells where he was a supervisor. He has worked for years in the Queensgate jail and the Hamilton County Justice Center.

The maximum penalty is a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Deputies charged him with a felony of theft in office instead of simply theft of less than $500, a misdemeanor.

The Hamilton County sheriff's office has put him on leave of absence without pay from his job while the case is pending. A grand jury will hear the case by the end of the month to decide whether to indict him.
