UC, Miami rank low in women's sports survey
The University of Cincinnati and Miami University have been singled out for not doing enough for women athletes in the areas of participation and financing for their teams, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The survey covered the 1997-98 academic year. The analysis was based on reports, prepared under the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act, from 306 of the 310 NCAA Division I member schools.
Schools awarding the least-proportional share of scholarships to women athletes were Vanderbilt, Miami University, Richmond, Eastern Washington and Colorado. Miami, which announced this year it was dropping three men's sports to comply with Title IX, awarded only 32 percent of its athletic-scholarship budget to women, who represented 45 percent of the athletes.
Women's sports also received only 36 percent of total team operating budgets. Excluding the military academies, the colleges with the smallest women's team budgets, proportionally, were Cincinnati, Louisville, Alcorn State, Southwestern Louisiana, Memphis.
