Clinton Memorial plans to grow
Hospital starts raising funds

WILMINGTON, Ohio Clinton Memorial Hospital is planning a $35 million expansion and renovation program to meet continuing community growth.
The project would expand the emergency department, renovate its birthing center and operating rooms, increase parking and build a four-story patient tower featuring all private rooms. Nearly all the hospital's rooms are double-occu pancy now.
Groundbreaking could occur before year's end.
The county-owned, but not county-funded, hospital has launched a capital campaign and is seeking an architect.
As the area continues to grow, we must expand to meet the health care needs of our communities, said Tom Kurtz, hospital president and chief executive.
Housing and employment growth in Clinton County, spurred largely by the Airborne Express hub that employs about 7,300, has driven up demand for hospital services.
From December 1997 to December 1998, births at Clinton Memorial grew 9.6 percent to 569; emergency room visits grew 4 percent to more than 28,500; and outpatient visits went up 4 percent to more than 147,000.
Clinton Memorial will be 50 years old in fall 2001.
It is licensed for 150 beds, but uses 98 for acute-care needs and 12 for skilled nursing care.
In addition to a capital campaign, the hospital plans to use its own reserves and borrow some money by issuing hospital improvement revenue bonds through the Ohio Hospital Association.
The project will not require tax levy support, officials said.
