Five Lebanon teen-agers hurt in wreck

BY MIRIAM SMITH
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LEBANON — Five Lebanon High School students were injured Monday afternoon after the driver reportedly lost control of the car on a curve on eastbound Ohio 350 and struck a tree.

Wesley Ferris, 16, the front-seat passenger, was trapped in the car before being cut free, said Trooper Rob Waulk of the Lebanon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He was flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, where he was in fair condition Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Four other students — Seth Hertlein, 17; Angela Utz, 16; Naomi Rippy, 15, and Nichole Hanny, 16 — were taken by ambulance from area fire departments to Bethesda North Hospital in Montgomery.

Three of the four were treated and released, and one is in serious condition, said Mickey Smith, spokeswoman for TriHealth, which includes Bethesda North.

She declined to release the name of the student who was seriously injured.

The students, who were riding in a 1985 Honda Accord, were reportedly on their way to the Morgan Canoe Livery, 5701 Ohio 350, Trooper Waulk said.

Authorities say the driver, Seth Hertlein, was maneuvering a sharp curve and drove left of center. The car went back to the right before the driver lost control and the car struck a tree off the right side of the road, the officer said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates speed was a factor, Trooper Waulk said.
