Visit to Balkans calms Voinovich
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON Sen. George Voinovich, a critic of the NATO military action in Yugoslavia, said Tuesday his trip to the Balkans didn't change his desire for a temporary cease-fire but did ease some qualms about the safety of American pilots.
They feel very confident about what they're doing, said Mr. Voinovich, R-Ohio.
Mr. Voinovich met with Air Force crewmen in Aviano, Italy, the base of two Army pilots killed in an Apache helicopter training-flight crash in northeastern Albania.
He said some now call the place where the Apaches are based Gibbs Field, in memory of one of the two who died, Chief Warrant Officer David A. Gibbs of Massillon, Ohio.
Chief Warrant Officer Gibbs was to be buried today in Arlington National Cemetery. Ohio Gov. Bob Taft ordered all state office buildings to fly the American flag at half-staff for the day.
