Staying in
        • Critic's picks: Time has run out for Tool Time, as Tim Allen ends eight seasons of ABC's Home Improvement with a clip-filled 60-minute episode (8 p.m., Channels 9, 2), followed by an expendable half-hour tribute (9 p.m.). And TV Critic John Kiesewetter will be watching NYPD Blue to see if they really do kill off Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence) in the season finale (10 p.m., Channels 9, 2).

        • • Tune in: Cast members from Appalachian Strings perform live on WNKU 89.7-FM, 11 a.m. today. Appalachian Strings is playing through Saturday at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.

        • Last chance: Today ends SmartExecutive.com's 1999 Celebrity Celebration Auction. Log on to www.smartexecutive.com for a chance to bid on a Tim Couch-autographed football, John Michael Montgomery-signed cowboy hat or two tickets to the U.S. Open tennis tournament.

What's in video stores today
        • Critic's pick: Under the category of “the best movies you never saw,” film critic Margaret A. McGurk puts the French-language drama Ponette at the top of the list. A film of breathtaking poignancy, Ponette follows the agonizing efforts of a little girl to cope with her mother's death. (Tell your video store to check the Fox Lorber catalog.) Also out today: Steven Spielberg's brilliant war epic, Saving Private Ryan.

Enquiring minds
        • Online onions? Forget super-duper supermarkets. By 2025, you'll order lower-priced, non-perishable products online, Procter & Gamble demographer Gary Wright tells American Demographics magazine. Mega-merged retailers will become “bundlers,” packaging orders of everything from peanut butter to coffee filters for door-to-door delivery. “Think Wal-MartExpress, a powerful combo of Wal-Mart and Federal Express,” American Demographics says.

Planning ahead
        • A day away: Cammy-winning blues guitarist Sonny Moorman and group play the Breakroom in Cherry Grove, 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Wednesday. 528-2601.

        • 48 hours out: Thursday's an evening full of country at Riverbend. The Volunteer Jam brings the Charlie Daniels Band, the Marshall Tucker Band and Molly Hatchett. 7 p.m. $17.50. 562-4949.

        • 72 hours 'til Friday: For perhaps the most prestigious food event in the region, chef Kathy Cary is bringing 14 famed chefs to Louisville to create a Celebrity Chefs Dinner, 7 p.m., Friday at Louisville's Camberley Brown Hotel. Proceeds benefit the Louisville Orchestra and national culinary organization, Chefs Collaborative. Tickets: $250. (502) 587-8681.
