Fire destroys Riverside apartment

Four people were homeless Friday night after a fire destroyed their Riverside apartment. No one was injured.

Shirley A. Randolph and three other occupants, whom fire authorities would not identify, had been living in the third-floor unit at Riverside Park Apartments, 3641 Fithian St.

The blaze apparently started about 11:30 p.m. in a bedroom and spread to the living room, causing an estimated $40,000 in damage, according to Cincinnati Fire Department District 1 Chief John Schubert. Red Cross personnel found the family temporary housing.

The rest of the brick apartment building was not damaged.

Walnut Hills man charged with rape
A Walnut Hills man was charged with rape and held in lieu of $250,000 cash bond Saturday in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.

Michael McMillan, 35, of the 2800 block of Woodburn Avenue, was arrested Saturday and accused of committing rape Feb. 12.

Authorities were not available Saturday to elaborate on the case, but a police report said the charge was based on the results of a medical examination and statement by the victim.

Woman killed in Butler Co. crash
A noontime crash on Princeton Road in Butler County Saturday left a Liberty Township woman dead and a family of five injured.

Peggy Thiergartner, 40, of Liberty Township, was driving her Chevy van westbound on Princeton Road when the vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and struck a 1996 Suburban, according to a statement issued by Butler County Sheriff Harold Don Gabbard.

Ms. Thiergartner was killed in the accident, the statement said.

The Grandon Ridge family of five traveling in the Suburban sustained injuries, but none were believed to be life-threatening, according to the statement.

Karen Alline, 27, was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital where she was in fair condition Saturday night. Paul Alline, 32, was taken to Middletown Regional Hospital, where he was treated and released. No information was available for their three children, a 7-year-old boy, and two toddlers — a boy and girl.

Mr. and Mrs. Alline and their older son were wearing seatbelts, and the two younger children were in car seats, which kept them from sustaining more severe injuries, the sheriff's office said.

Authorities did not know Saturday why Ms. Thiergartner's van veered into oncoming traffic. The crash remains under investigation by the Butler County Sheriff's Office.

Two men die after small plane crashes
PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Two men died Saturday when the small plane they were in hit some treetops shortly after taking off and crashed into a residential area of Leroy Township in Lake County, authorities said.

The pilot, Charles J. Toman, 58, of Leroy Township, about four miles southeast of Painesville, and a passenger, Ned J. Reish, 37, of Chardon, in Geauga County, were dead at the scene, according to the State Highway Patrol.

The Federal Aviation Administration has begun investigating the crash, which happened about 30 miles northeast of Cleveland.

Patrol Sgt. James T. Sivak said the fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft capable of holding a pilot and one passenger took off from an airstrip on Mr. Toman's property about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

He said Mr. Toman apparently was taking Mr. Reish on a trip, with Middlefield Airport in Geauga County as their destination.

“Following take-off, the plane hit the tops of some nearby trees, banked to right and dove nose first into the ground,” he said.

The plane crashed into the yard of a house, but no one was at the house at the time, Sgt. Sivak said.

Exchange student drowns in Huron River
HURON, Ohio — A 20-year-old exchange student who couldn't swim jumped off a pier and drowned early Saturday in the Huron River, officials said.

The man was identified only as an exchange student from Africa.

Other details about his identity either were not known or were not being released, said a man at the fire department who declined to be identified.

The student was with five others when he jumped about 3 a.m.

He came back to the top, waved his hands and went back under, the department said.

It took friends about 20 minutes to get to a phone to call authorities. His body was recovered about 4:45 a.m. in water about 18 feet deep.

Inmate bites ear of another in court
AKRON, Ohio — An inmate chained to another after cursing at a judge started a fight and bit off part of the second man's ear.

Roland Finney, 39, of Akron, was sentenced Friday in Summit County Common Pleas Court to five years in prison for robbing a convenience store.

Mr. Finney swore at the judge. Deputies removed him and chained him to another inmate. The second inmate had no connection to Mr. Finney's case.
