Corryville shooting suspect in custody after standoff
BY ERIN GIBSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A man arrested after a mid-day standoff with police was charged Sunday with critically wounding a man hours before in Corryville.
Mark Harris, 42, of Westwood, was shot in the head shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday between Euclid and Vine streets and taken to University Hospital. He underwent surgery and remained in critical condition late Sunday.
The suspect, 34-year-old Adam Schmidt, barricaded himself inside his apartment at 2610 Vine St. when police arrived to arrest him about noon Sunday. Police also charged him with kidnapping.
Standoff witnesses said police took Mr. Schmidt into custody quietly, but only after police officers and a SWAT team had cleared the street and surrounded the outside of his building.
The SWAT team just came from out of nowhere, said Kimberly Buie of Westwood, who was walking along Vine Street about noon Sunday with her two daughters, ages 8 and 11.
Police ordered Ms. Buie and all others outside on Vine Street inside a business for about an hour. T
SWAT team officers outside wielded shields, and an officer kept a rifle pointed at the suspect's residence, according to standoff witness Fred Pomeranz, who also lives on Vine Street.
Ms. Buie said, I had never seen that stuff except on Cops.
After a short time, officers led the suspect from his apartment building, put him into the back of a squad car and drove off, Mr.Pomeranz said.
Lamont Taylor, president of the Corryville Community Council, praised the police for getting Mr. Schmidt out of his apartment and into custody quickly and safely.
No shots were fired, and no one was injured in the standoff.
Cincinnati Homicide Unit investigators are asking anyone with information on the Sunday morning shooting to call the unit at 352-3542 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 352-3040. Callers may remain anonymous.
