Driver dies when van plunges into river

The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON — Police say they do not know what caused a woman to drive off Neilan Boulevard and into the Great Miami River at 3:45 p.m. on Memorial Day.

The woman, whom police did not identify Monday, was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital Hamilton a short time after she was pulled from her submerged van.

The van came to rest on the bottom of the river near shore, with just a few inches showing above water, according to Hamilton Police Sgt. Steve Ebbing.

The woman was pulled from the van by members of the Hamilton Fire Department.

“Without being able to get inside somebody's head, I have no idea why she did it,” he said.

The incident is under in vestigation.

The woman apparently swerved off the road and traveled some distance, crossing a levee walk before plunging into the water.

The incident was called in to police by someone passing by.
