N.KY. BASEBALL TOURNAMENTS

New Cath knocks out CovCath in quarters

The Cincinnati Enquirer

There was no celebration, just the traditional handshake. “I told the players that we're not finished,” Newport Central Catholic baseball coach Jeff Schulkens said after the Thoroughbreds' 9-5 upset victory over Covington Catholic on Tuesday.

“Last week after we beat Newport, the kids celebrated. The next day in the district championship game, we had a letdown against Highlands and lost (5-3).”

A two-run double by Ken Wagner and a two-run home run by Ben Wrobleski in the four-run fifth inning lifted Newport Catholic, which avenged two regular-season losses to the Colonels.

“I owe Adam a Big Mac,” Dixie Heights coach C.M. Maxwell said. “He's a line-drive hitter and leads the team in triples. I told Adam if he hit a home run this season, I'd buy him a Big Mac.”

Chris Unkraut went the distance, striking out nine. His brother, Tom, made a sensational diving catch with two on in the third inning to cut a Crusaders rally short.
