N.KY. SOFTBALL TOURNAMENTS

Bishop delivers 1-0 checkmate

BY RAY SCHAEFER

HEBRON — Boone County center fielder Becky Bishop was growing frustrated as her Lady Rebels spent nearly two hours Tuesday battling Dixie Heights in the Ninth Region fast-pitch softball quarterfinals.

The seventh-grader finally did something about it: Her single to right field in the bottom of the 10th inning gave her team a 1-0 win at RiverShore Sports Complex.

Boone County's reward: Notre Dame in the semifinals at 4:30p.m. today.

The numbers one and 10 were factors in Simon Kenton's game against Holy Cross, too. Simon Kenton junior pitcher Jessica Dougherty tossed a one-hitter, and the Pioneers cruised past the Indians, 10-0. Simon Kenton meets Ryle in the semifinals at 4:30p.m. today.

Bishop's single off Dixie eighth-grader Lindsey Mayberry scored seventh-grader Ashlee Tyler, a pinch runner for winning pitcher Heather Lawrence.

“It was coming right down the middle,” Bishop said. “Usually I can hit it where I want to.”

Lawrence reached first when Dixie first baseman Sarah Schmidt booted a grounder. An infield single by shortstop Amber Janneck and an error by third baseman Kasey Neugent on Libby Schleisman's bunt sent Bishop to the plate.

Boone County's run was the bright spot in an otherwise frustrating day — the Lady Rebels blew bases loaded scoring chances in the seventh and ninth and hit into a double play in the eighth.

Simon Kenton had little trouble eliminating Holy Cross, the only team in the tournament with a sub-.500 record.

The Pioneers had 13 hits, scored in every inning, and Dougherty had a no-hitter for 5ô innings until Holy Cross shortstop Sarah Cross.

Tuesday was a much better outing for Dougherty, who gave up 11 runs and 10 hits in an 11-7 loss to Dixie Heights in Thursday's 34th District championship game. Dougherty wasn't too bad at the plate, either — a 3-for-4 game with a double and two RBI.
