Brossart faces state champ in baseball region final

The Cincinnati Enquirer

It's out of the frying pan and into the fire for the Bishop Brossart baseball team.

After defeating Clark County 7-0 on Wednesday in the 10th region tournament semifinals, the Mustangs must now play two-time defending state champion Harrison County tonight (7 p.m.) in Cynthiana for the championship.

Brossart senior pitcher Brad Schultz allowed only one hit, struck out seven and walked two to improve to his record to 10-1.

Nick Ziegler, Jeff Clark and Jeff Schwegmann each drove in two runs to pace the Mustang offense. Ziegler's home run in the second inning proved to be the game winner.

Brossart will face Harrison County pitcher Noochie Varner, a right hand thrower with a 7-2 record. Mustang coach Bob Rowe was non committal on who will pitch for the Mustangs.

        Bishop Brossart ....... 011  104  0—7  7  0

        Clark County ....... 000  000  0—0  1  1

        WP—Brad Schultz (7 Ks, 10-1). LP—Chris Edge (4 Ks, 7-2). Hitting leaders: B—Ziegler HR, 2 RBI; Clark 2B, 2 RBI; Ruth 2-3; Schwegmann 2B, 2 RBI. Records: B 26-9, C 28-10.

        • Harrison County 19, Campbell County 7, 10th region at Harrison County — The two-time defending state champion Thoroughbreds erupted for six runs in the second inning en route to the victory.

The setback ended Campbell County 19-year veteran coach Tom Mohr's career at 367 wins and 217 losses. Mohr has decided to retire from coaching and teaching.

“I'll think about the future during the summer,” Mohr said. “Baseball will always be in my blood and I could come back and coach at another school in the future.”

Pitching with a fever, Adam Eads wasn't up to the taskfor the Camels against a Harrison County team that scored nine runs during the first two innings.

“This was a rebuilding year for us,” Mohr said. “We started several freshmen and sophomores and I didn't think we would get this far.”
