Nicklaus plans to skip British Open

The Associated Press

DUBLIN, Ohio — Jack Nicklaus, who missed the Masters for the first time in 40 years because of hip replacement surgery, will skip the British Open for the second year in a row so as not to jeopardize his recovery.

Nicklaus' streak of majors ended at 154 last year when he sat out the British Open because of hip problems. He underwent surgery in January and returns to the PGA Tour this week in his Memorial Tournament here.

Nicklaus said Tuesday that his schedule will prevent him from playing in the British Open on July 15-18 in Carnoustie, Scotland.

Nicklaus is committed to playing in the U.S. Senior Open and the Senior Players Championship the two weeks before the British Open.

“That would be three weeks in a row,” he said of the British Open. “That's just more than I can play. I said that's just crazy to even think about.”
