Confusion envelops beautification


Donation requests in with water bills

        A city beautification campaign that caused confusion among Cincinnati water customers resumed this week after organizers changed the way contributions are being collected.

        In April and May, Cincinnati Water Works customers received a donation request from Keep Cincinnati Beautiful with their bills. The agency thought it would be a convenient way to help a new program reach nearly 200,000 water customers.

        But the campaign caused some confusion. Along with the envelope inside the bill to return water payments was an envelope to make a donation to Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.

        Of the 65,500 bills that went out with the donation request, payments for 67 have been sent in the wrong envelope to the wrong place, said Patty Leeseman, fund development manager for Keep Cincinnati Beautiful. The mistakes were made despite two warnings printed on them telling people to make sure they were using the correct envelope.

        Fearing someone could have service disconnected because a payment was lost in the confusion, the waterworks halted the program in the second week of May until it could assure that payments and donations were going to their proper destinations, said Ann deGroot, superintendent of commercial services at the waterworks.

        The agencies restarted the campaign this week after agreeing that both envelopes would be opened at the waterworks with Keep Cincinnati Beautiful present to take its donations, Ms. Leeseman said.

        No one had water service disrupted because of the mix-ups.

        The Keep Cincinnati Beautiful campaign has raised about $2,800 for a program that seeks to plant more than 50,000 flowers along local highways. The group hopes to raise $20,000.
