Smog alert declared for today, Monday
Hot, dry weather expected this weekend has prompted officials to declare a smog alert for Greater Cincinnati today and Monday.
Unhealthful levels of smog are expected throughout Northern Kentucky and Southwestern Ohio. The American Lung Association recommends that children with asthma and senior citizens stay indoors during the smog alert, preferably with air conditioning.
AccuWeather Inc. is forecasting hot and humid weather over the next few days, with temperatures expected in the upper 80s.
Smog is formed on hot days when sunlight “bakes” pollutants from vehicles, lawn mowers, factories and other sources. People are asked to take steps to minimize pollution, especially during the day, including:
• Refueling vehicles in the evening.
• Driving less, combining errands to save car trips and taking public transportation.
• Postponing use of lawn mowers until after 6 p.m., as well as chainsaws and gas-powered trimmers, which emit more pollution than cars.
• Conserving electricity.
