Man killed, 4 teens hurt in head-on crash

        TURTLECREEK TOWNSHIP — A 42-year-old Oregonia man was killed and four teen-agers injured in a head-on collision about 9:20 p.m. Friday on Wilmington Road in Warren County.

        Michael Halkiotis, of the 600 block of Corwin Road, drove into oncoming lanes and collided with another car, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatcher Jerri Redfern of the Lebanon post. The cause of the accident was under investigation.

        The driver of the other car, 16-year-old Erin Cain of the 300 block of Turner Drive in Lebanon, was flown to University Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition Saturday.

        One of her passengers, 16-year-old Matthew P. Jones of the 2400 block of Tumbleweed Lane in Lebanon, was in critical condition at Bethesda North Hospital.

        The others in the car were treated for minor injuries and released from Bethesda North: Robbie Duncan, 17, of the 1100 block of Reeder Road in Blanchester; and Christina Maple, 16, of the 2000 block of Sunflower Court in Lebanon.

Manchester woman killed in U.S. 50 crash
        MIAMI TOWNSHIP — A 46-year-old Manchester woman was killed Saturday morning when she swerved into oncoming traffic on U.S. 50 in Clermont County and struck another vehicle head-on, authorities said.

        Patricia A. Helms, 307 E. Seventh St., was heading east and driving around a flat, dry curve about 5:30 a.m. when she crossed the center line, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol report. She was dead at the scene.

        The driver of the other vehicle, 22-year-old Michael T. Cook of Price Hill, had no visible injuries.

N. College Hill man arrested on rape charge
        A 33-year-old North College Hill man was arrested Friday, accused of raping a woman in an apartment in South Fairmont.

        Michael Steele, 1198 West Way Drive, was arrested 31/2 hours after the reported 4:15 p.m. attack. He is accused of raping the woman on a bed in an apartment in the 2000 block of Sutter Avenue, then fleeing the residence.

Casino proponent will try, try again
        LORAIN, Ohio — A developer who failed to win approval for riverboat gambling wants to try for a third time.

        Alan Spitzer said Friday that he hopes Gov. Bob Taft will not become as powerful an opponent as predecessor George Voinovich was in 1996, when the casino issue was overwhelmingly rejected in statewide voting. Mr. Spitzer also failed in 1990.

        Mr. Spitzer argues that a casino would help economic development and create jobs.

Hearing scheduled on utility deregulation
        A public hearing on the benefits and possible problems associated with deregulation of electric utilities in Ohio will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Cincinnati City Hall.

        The General Assembly is considering legislation that would deregulate the industry.

        Some topics of the discussion:

        • Who benefits from deregulation, residential customers or big industry and utility companies?

        • How can residents can stop utility-funded weatherization and education programs from being scrapped?

Woman shot on Eastern Avenue
        Cincinnati police are investigating the shooting of a woman in the East End late Saturday night.

        The woman was taken to University Hospital, but her condition was unavailable.

        Police responded to the scene, in the 3700 block of Eastern Avenue, shortly after 11 p.m. Investigators took another woman into custody for questioning.
