GET TO IT

A guide to help make your day

Going out
        • Two treats: It's beautiful acoustic music in an equally fine setting. Two national singer/songwriters and one local boy team for a 7 p.m. concert today at Somerset Church in Heritage Village, Sharon Woods.

Barbara Kessler and Greg Greenway, who record for Eastern Front, will headline. Opening will be Dave Wolfenberger, who formerly led local folk favorites the Marshwiggles and Thom Scarecrow. $5; proceeds benefit restoration of the circa 1829 church. 563-9484.

        • Jazz jam: Tonight at Coco's in Covington, it's the Rod Gunther Trio, 8-11 p.m. 491-1369.

Staying in
        • Critic's picks: Uh-oh, the big 3-0. Karen (Megan Mullally) helps Jack (Sean Hayes) face turning 30 by hiring him as her personal assistant on Will & Grace (9:30 p.m., Channels 5, 22). And TV Critic John Kiesewetter notes that the People's Century continues with films about the civil rights movement in 1960, and the women's movement in 1969 (9-11 p.m., Channels 48, 54, 16).

What's in stores today
        • Built to spill: Is your dad a klutz? Can't take him anywhere without making a mess? If this sounds familiar, then Savane pants thinks it has the perfect Father's Day present.

Savane's Deep Dye pants treated with Scotchgard ($45-$48) can keep people from staring at the stains on dad's clothes. In a quick test, we watched liquids bead up like mercury on the specially treated fabric.

Savane pants are available at Dillard's and Lazarus. Information: www.savane.com or (800) 972-8263.

Look for new Scotchgard-treated ties, too.

        • Big catch: For making the big catch without water there's the new Ultimate Bass Fishing game by Radica, $24.99. The virtual fishing game features an extended pole that bends and vibrates when a “fish” is on the line. There's a slower recreational fishing mode and a tournament mode. It's at Toys R Us and Wal-Mart.

Enquiring minds
        • Record birth: The Population Reference Bureau has predicted that the world's population will pass 6 billion with the birth of a baby Oct. 12. The infant is likely to be a boy, because statistically, more boys are born, and he probably will be born in a Third World country, because those countries have the highest number of births.

A reason to party
        • Barry's B-day: Sing a round of “Happy Birthday” for Barry Manilow, who's 53 today. Maybe you can deliver late congrats Sept. 3 when he plays Riverbend.

Planning ahead
        • A day away: Catch the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, 8:30 p.m. Friday (also Saturday) at Riverbend Music Center. Erich Kunzel, conductor, special guest artist Art Garfunkel, VoiceBox and Cincinnati Brass Band. $15-$33. 381-3300.

        • 48 hours out: Live music, live chef demonstrations and plenty of pork chops, at the Findlay Market Pork Chop Festival, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday. 956-1852.

        • 72 hours 'til Sunday: Take dad (or grandad) on an old-time passenger train ride. Turtle Creek Valley Railway in Lebanon will offer dad free fare in honor of Father's Day (when accompanied by a paid passenger fare; ). Departures 1 and 3 p.m. Reservations: 398-8584.

Get To It appears daily. Send items to Get To It, Tempo, Cincinnati Enquirer, 312 Elm St., Cincinnati 45202; fax: 768-8330.
