Man dies in fiery crash

BY DAVID ECK
Enquirer Contributor

MONROE — A fiery two-truck crash on northbound Interstate 75 in Butler County on Wednesday morning killed one man and sent another to Middletown Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

The 5:45 a.m. crash near a rest area on north I-75, south of Ohio 63, snarled rush-hour traffic for hours and jammed surrounding roads.

The person killed could not be identified Wednesday. Police said he was driving a small work truck north on I-75 at the rest stop when it went off the road and hit the rear of a tractor-trailer rig parked on the highway berm.

The work truck, which was carrying welding equipment, and the back of the semi's trailer burst into flames. The rig was hauling wood pilings.

The driver of the work truck could not escape.

“He was pinned in the truck,” said Dave Waddell, assistant fire chief for Monroe.

The truck rig was parked near an entrance to the rest area just south of Ohio 63. Police said the rest stop was apparently full and the semi driver, Alvin Appleby, 52, of Elk Horn, Ky., pulled onto the berm to sleep.

Police have no idea why the smaller truck went off the road, and there were no skid marks, said Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper D. Ledford. Mr. Appleby was treated at Middletown Regional Hospital and released, Trooper Ledford said.

Mr. Appleby was cited for failing to obey a traffic control sign prohibiting non-emergency stopping.

The wreck closed two lanes of north I-75 for much of the morning.
