Picketing Teamster faces assault charge

The Cincinnati Enquirer

A member of the Teamsters Local 100 was arrested on a felonious assault charge during contract negotiations Wednesday following a weekend fight involving pickets outside Children's Hospital.

James “Jimmy” Matheson, 64, of Fort Wright, Ky., is accused of throw ing a piece of concrete at the back of Steven Callen's neck Friday when Mr. Callen, of Elsmere, tried to get through the picket line to enter the hospital to see his daughter.

John Stockman, a driver for Hilltop Basic Resources who was picketing, also was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge for allegedly throwing punches at Mr. Callen.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Melba Marsh placed new restrictions on striking truck drivers Tuesday after viewing a video of the fight.

She told the Teamsters and representatives from Hilltop to meet Wednesday for a negotiating session.

Mr. Matheson, a key negotiator for the Teamsters, was arrested during the negotiating session at Hilltop's downtown office on West Fourth Street. The groups are trying to reconvene today. Mr. Matheson is scheduled to appear in municipal court today for his arraignment.
