Students tested in March
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Ohio Fourth-Grade Proficiency Test is given, by law, on the first Monday following March 15.
Ohio's public-school children take one section of the test per day in order: writing, reading, math, citizenship, science. Each section must be completed within 21/2 hours. (Most students can finish a section in 60-90 minutes.)
During the next two weeks, test sections are given to students who missed taking one or several.
Children on an Individual Education Plan (IEP, for students with disabilities) are exempt from proficiency tests; they may take them, but the scores are not included in a district's overall passing percentage.
After July 1, 2001, the law changes to allow students three chances during fourth grade to pass the test. It will be given in fall 2001; spring and summer 2002.
