Townships plan to share fire station
Deerfield, Hamilton have bids
BY KEVIN ALDRIDGE
The Cincinnati Enquirer
DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP Fire officials plan to break ground on the township's third fire station, which will be on Kings Mills Road, by mid-July.
Deputy Fire Chief Nathan Bromen said Thursday the township has received seven bids for the construction of Station 58, which it will share with Hamilton Township.
Trustees likely will award the contract by July 6, he said.
Sharing this fire station cuts (costs) in half for both communities by eliminating the need to build two separate stations, Deputy Chief Bromen said. And aside from the cost savings on apparatus and manpower, residents get the added benefit of better response time.
Deerfield and Hamilton township officials reached a tentative agreement in December to jointly staff a firehouse at the northeast corner of Columbia and Kings Mills roads to better cover the fast-growing areas of southern Warren County.
Under the agreement, Deerfield Township would build and own the $1.15 million station on township land, while Hamilton Township would provide fire equipment and trucks. Firefighters would come from both townships.
Hamilton Township Fire Chief Goebel Williams has said he favors the idea. He said the Kings Mills station would give Hamilton Township firefighters a quicker response on emergency runs to the township's largest industry, Sumitomo Sitix Silicon Inc. on Grandin Road, as well as two large subdivisions and a retail center proposed for Ohio 48 and Dwyer Road.
Fire officials expect to open the Kings Mills station by May 5.
The fire department's staffing has been in a state of flux in recent weeks, as six firefighters have left the township for full-time positions elsewhere.
Township trustees tried to fill that void Tuesday by hiring five part-time firefighters. That brings the department's tally to 80 part-time firefighters and paramedics.
Deputy Chief Bromen said the department probably will add several more firefighters to its roster in the coming weeks.
The lastest additions to the Deerfield Township Fire are:
Steve Coley, of the Springdale Fire Department.
Dave Jennings, a 19-year veteran who works full-time with the Colerain Township Fire Department.
Mark Miller, a five-year veteran at the Forest Park Fire Department.
Steve Oughterson, a five-year veteran with the Loveland-Symmes Fire Department.
Patrick Strausbaugh, who worked four years with the Montgomery Fire Department.
Trustees also approved promoting Lt. Dave Schmiege to captain. Capt. Schmiege will fill a vacancy left by Capt. Debbie Cox, who resigned two weeks ago.
Deerfield Township's fledgling fire department began operating Oct. 1 after the
Mason-Deerfield Joint Fire District split.
