Church roof caves; nobody injured

Part of a West End church collapsed Tuesday evening, but fortunately no was inside at the time.
We were indeed fortunate that it collapsed when it did, Bill Langevin, director of the city buildings and inspections department, said Tuesday of the roof collapse at New St. Paul Baptist Church. Apparently, choir practice was scheduled later in the evening.
The roof of the church in the 1900 block of Freeman Avenue collapsed shortly before 6:30 p.m. when a main truss gave way, Mr. Langevin said.
Apparently, vibrations from the recent demolition of an attached building had weakened the truss, he said.
Inspectors from his department will be on the scene todayto determine the status of the building, he said.
Upon their arrival, firefighters saw that one side wall, the roof and the entire middle section of the church had collapsed, Cincinnati Fire Lt. Thomas Parker said.
No damage estimate was available Tuesday, although Lt. Parker described damage to the structure as almost total.
Firefighters shut off gas and electricity to prevent a fire, then barricaded the church. They left the scene within an hour.
