Comments due on plan to ban Net prescriptions
Today is the last day to submit testimony on a proposed State Medical Board ban on Ohio doctors prescribing drugs over the Internet to patients they have never examined.
Written testimony for or against the proposed ban can be sent by 5 p.m. to the board's Columbus headquarters by fax, (614) 728-5946. The board will vote July 14 whether to enact the ban.
Tom Dilling, public and government affairs officer for the board, said the proposed ban arose after Dr. Daniel L. Thompson, who practices family medicine in Dublin, prescribed drugs to patients via his Web site.
Dr. Thompson ran the Web site for six months before suspending it in March.
To prescribe that way falls below the minimum standard of care, Mr. Dilling said.
No other Ohio doctors are known now to prescribe drugs online, according to Cincinnati, Columbus and state medical groups.
The proposed ban would make exemptions for legitimate practices, he said, including doctors prescribing medicine online for patients another doctor had seen and diagnosed. Full text of the proposed ban is online at www.state.oh.us/med under the public rules hearing section, rule No. 4731-11-09.
