Delta will pay $30M to name new center

Delta Air Lines will spend $30 million to attach its name to a $400 million proposed expansion of Cincinnati's convention center.
The airline's board approved the contribution Thursday to help pay for doubling the size of the Albert B. Sabin Cincinnati Convention Center.
It is not our intention to eclipse Dr. Sabin's name, said Todd Clay, director of corporate communications in Atlanta. His contribution has been so great that it's very important his name continues at that center....It's just something we haven't gotten to yet.
Dr. Sabin developed the oral polio vaccine in Cincinnati.
Mr. Clay suggested something like the Sabin Convention Center sponsored by Delta Air Lines or the Delta Convention Center featuring the Sabin Room.
Expansion proponents expect the endorsement of the region's dominant air carrier to prompt other public and private funding.
This is probably the most significant part of our whole funding strategy, said Michael Wilson, president of the Greater Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau. Delta has taken a very important and bold step for this whole community. This provides a sense of legitimacy for the entire funding project.
The prospect of a new name for the center did not please Heloisa Sabin, the doctor's widow. .
My husband would always say how proud he was to be from Cincinnati, Mrs. Sabin said. And when the city named its high-profile convention center after him, the family considered it an honor.
It is difficult for me to understand why they would change, she said. I guess money talks.
